I have been fielding LOTS of inquiries about raw feeding for my dogs, so I thought I’d share a post, to describe my motivations for doing so.
In nature our dogs would encounter a variety of raw vitamin and mineral rich foods that I am happy to at least attempt to duplicate for my dogs. I am really all about trying to maintain an optimum level of health and be pro-active in providing a quality of life for my dogs.
Low grade processed dog food is typically preserved with chemicals that are known carcinogens, which is unfortunate. What I find even harder to wrap my brain around is that some of the worst grade food is marketed extremely well and frequently. Consumers are really confused and conflicted…I am surprised there is not more upheaval because this is happening to our furry family members. If a brand of infant formula was preserved with formaldehyde, the FDA would never even allow it to hit the shelves. Any who…I am collapsing my soap box now…
An unhealthy diet can not only effect physical appearance (such as skin allergies, tooth decay, dull coat, intestinal and/or digestive issues), it can also effect your dog’s behavior. Bollywood, had been consuming a highly processed dog food which was comprised primarily of corn. Even for a puppy, his energy level was OVER THE TOP. Which makes sense because he was consuming mostly carbohydrates. Puppies require a higher fat and protein content because they are still growing. Karma requires a lower fat and protein combination because she is a senior dog. I need to be very aware of what Karma consumes because she has joint issues, so maintaining her weight is also crucial. More weight on the joints causes more joint pain…Just like with people.
As you can tell from the post, there’s a ton of information to consider. The needs of each dog should be tailored to their diet.
