Heeling proactively prevents a difficult walk with your dog

by Steph Mahrle

This photo depicts what heeling should look like, as you are out walking with your dog. The idea of a structured walk is to provide your dog with calm leadership, to proactively prevent your dog from dashing ahead of you, and engaging in unsavory behaviors such as growling, barking, lunging, and the like. Bailey struggles with excited, anxious, whining whenever she is on leash and sees another dog within any proximity to her. She's not a dog fighter, she is just excited and anticipating engagement. Heeling provides Bailey with a job. Her job is to calmly walk at my side.
